Description

Location of the Apartment

History of the Building

The Papalić Palace is situated in the western part of the old town centre of Split just a couple metres away from the main city square Pjaca and Diocletian’s Palace. The Papalić Palace was built in the 13th century for the noble Papalić family by the famous Croatian sculptor and architect Juraj Dalmatinac (Giorgio Orsini) who amongst many things constructed the Cathedral of St. James in Šibenik.

It is one of the most remarkable gothic palaces in Split. The palace is called the Little Papalić Palace so that people will not be confused with its larger 15th-century counterpart which is located in the northern-east quarter of Diocletian’s Palace where the Split City Museum is placed. The most recognised feature of the Little Papalić Palace is the family crest which carved on the exterior wall of the building.

Neighbourhood

The Papalić Palace has an incredible position in the old town centre of Split. As previously mentioned, the apartment is situated in the western part of the old town centre of Split between two prominent city squares in Split, Pjaca and Fruit Square.

Pjaca (People’s Square) is the main square in Split. The square is located outside of Diocletian’s Palace, just a minute walk north from the apartment. It is filled with many historical attractions (e.g. Old Town Hall, Palace Ciprianis and the old Clock Bell Tower), numerous bars, restaurants and shops.

On the opposite side from Pjaca, there is the Fruit Square located just before the popular Riva. The square is also situated a minute walk away from the apartment. Once home to the bursting and colourful fruit market, the Fruit Square features many historical monuments (e.g. the statue of Marko Marulić, the father of Croatian literature, octagonal Venetian tower and the Milesi Palace), numerous bars, restaurants and shops.

Moving across Pjaca, you can see the majestic Iron Gate which serves as the western entrance of Diocletian’s Palace where you can admire the historical attractions such as the Old Clock Bell Tower and Palace Ciprianis. When you have entered the palace, feel the history as you are walking through the ancient stone-paved streets, visiting the many historical attractions that are within the Palace and old town centre such as the Cathedral of St. Domnius, Peristyle and the Diocletian’s Cellars.

After walking through the old town centre, there is Riva, the promenade, with many cafes and restaurants where you can sit down, enjoy drinking coffee, watching the lovely view of the harbour and try blending with the locals. A few minutes’ walk from the apartment, you can find the local green market Pazar where in the morning you can buy and sample fresh fruit and vegetables.

If you are looking to retreat yourself somewhere peaceful and quiet, you can enjoy your time in different nearby parks or at Marjan Park, a hill on the peninsula of the city of Split which is covered in dense Mediterranean pine forests and completely surrounded by the city and the sea, making it a unique sight.

About a 10 minute walk from the apartment, there are some popular beaches. One of the most popular is Bačvice Beach. It is a sandy beach filled with many restaurants, cafes and nightclubs. In the morning, you can spend your time sunbathing, swimming, snorkelling or playing the popular sport picigin. While, in the evening, experience the busy nightlife that Split has to offer, from listening to live music on the open-air to bopping to the rhythm and beat of the most popular disco and nightclubs in the city.
